◆ Guardian (UK), 2022-5-9: Once a zero-Covid poster child, Taiwan learns to live with the virusexperts predict... up to 16,000 dead.   Rules and regulations change almost daily and incrementally. The death of a two-year-old boy last month highlighted communication failures exacerbated by Taiwan’s entrenched bureaucracy.  hospital ...colleagues are understaffed and overworked, there is not enough protective equipment or backup to replace staff who go on leave because they caught the virus...and are still subject to a pandemic ban on health workers leaving the country. theguardian.com/world/2022/may/09/once-a-zero-covid-poster-child-taiwan-learns-to-live-with-the-virus

Oral antiviral pills for CovID

Taiwan has bad record in 2021 Applications for Remdesivir (expensive drug) were often rejected or delayed which caused CovID patients' deaths.
Now, similar things happen again ?

USA Taiwan
CNBC, 2022-3-1: President Joe Biden said Americans will be able to get Covid antiviral pills (Paxlovid or Merck's molnupiravir) for free if they test positive at a pharmacy.
China Times, CTV news, 2022-4-27: oral antiviral pills imported for CovID are not enough.

United Daily, 2022-5-11: Taiwan's CDC "creates" a world-unique, rigid & severe admin. procedure for Cov. patients to apply for Paxlovid, therefore, most of them fail to have antiviral pills.  How can little people fight the state machine ? udn.com/news/story/11091/6304035?from=udn-catehotnews_ch2
UDN, 2022-5-10: Taiwan gov. regards Paxlovid as treasures.  Only 2000 out of 280 thousands CovID patients had Paxlovid.

UDN, 2022-5-9: It takes 4-5 days to know the results of PCR test and rapid test, which might results in serious delay to have Paxlovid or even death.   (udn.com/news/story/122190/6298176?from=udn_ch2cate6638sub122190_pulldownmenu_v2)
UDN, 2022-5-3: Till May 1, more than 6000 elderly (aged 60+) were infected Omicron, only 800+courses Paxlovid were given.  (udn.com/news/story/7338/6283302?from=udn-catehotnews_ch2UDN, 2022-5-1: A woman aged 60+ was rejected to be hospitalized and not old enough to have Paxlovid, she died next day (it's almost all cases - patients cannot have Paxlovid unless staying in hospital-wards , 75 is min age to be hospitalized health.udn.com/health/story/120951/6281043; cdc.gov.tw/Uploads/a48e6ecf-54c1-4025-8b5c-46afebdfde9e.pdf )
TTV news, 2022-5-11: 2 problems to have Paxlovid (1) too late to get official test-positive inform or text-message (2) a long queue (7 days or more) to have telemedicine.

TTV news, 2022-5-11: a lady aged 73 was rejected to have Paxlovid because it has not worsened to pneumonitis.  But CDC declared patients aged 65 OR with high risk can have antiviral pills.  (TVBS news, 2022-5-8)

In Taiwan, 65 is min. age to have Paxlovid. However,
CDC (USA), 2022-4-15:
Among these deaths in Hong Kong, 96% occurred in persons aged ≥60 years (cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7115e1.htm)

Statista, 2022-4-1:  93.79% deaths in S. Korea occurred in persons aged ≥60 years (statista.com/statistics/1105080/south-korea-coronavirus-deaths-by-age/)
If Taiwan is still very frugal ,  I believe many patients aged 55-65 are willing to pay for Paxlovid.  Till today, 86% deaths in Taiwan are aged above 60 (CTV news, 2022-5-11).  All moderate and severe Cov. news patients are aged 60+.
(TTV news, 2022-5-11)
UDN, 2022-5-10: MD in Taipei city hospital says many interferences or obstructions are ahead of prescription.

udn.com/news/story/122190/6298743?from=udn-catehotnews_ch2

Law maker Lai Shyh-bao said in CTV 2022-5-11: It's not simple to have Paxlovid.

◆ L.A. Times, ABC News, 2022-4-28: Taiwan faces largest COVID-19 outbreak yet. Most vulnerable in Taiwan's outbreak this time are children and the elderly.  Difficulty buying rapid tests is likely due in part to the government's thought throughout the pandemic that there are few benefits to mass testing. The health minister last year said that public funds and medical resources could better be used elsewhere.
